How I Plan To Grow My Newsletter To 1000 Subscribers

Reading time: 2 min

I fell in love with newsletters after reading a bunch of them from the legendary Trio on twitter (Jay, Claudia and Syed)

It was so inspiring to see young people go out of their way to write awesome pieces of content each week with so much passion and finesse.

My fondness grew even more when I started reading The Saturday Solopreneur by Justin Welsh and The Koe Letters by Dan Koe.

So I decided to start my own.

This was around June last year and I didn't really know what I was doing to be honest.

After a while, I reached 10 subscribers. It was such an incredible milestone for me.

And then about a month ago, I hit 60 subscribers, again, it was awesome.

But obviously, 60 subscribers isn't enough to be called a “milestone” by many and honestly, I feel it can be better. I want to get up to 1000 subscribers by the end of the year.

Why do I want 1000 subscribers anyway?

I'm sure you know the benefits of building an audience, whether it's on facebook, twitter or in this case, newsletter.

But I have a more selfless motive as to why I want that number.

I want to be an inspiration to many upcoming creators out there looking to start their newsletter.

I want creators to get rid of the scarcity mindset that makes them feel like there's no more space for them in the newsletter space. That's not true.

So basically, if they can see me pull it off, they should have enough motivation to go into it too.

Here's my plan to achieve this goal:

1. Create a curiosity Flywheel

I know I talk about my newsletter on twitter enough.

But it almost seems like I'm only talking about it when I'm sending out one on a Sunday evening. That's not good enough.

What I plan to do here is talk about the important stuff alone:

  • Monthly stats on how it's going so far

  • Sneak peek at the next issue a day before release

  • Make references to my newsletter and coaching program more often

And this applies to my twitter account as well. I'll talk about my tweets and threads more often here, cos why not amairite.

2. The Network Effect

I don't think I'll be able to use this yet.

It involves cross-promotions of my newsletter with others of my level (preferably friends).

And as you can probably tell, this will only work when I've gotten at least more than 200 subscribers.

But this is a really good strategy as me and the next person will be making references of each other's newsletters in our emails. I have no doubt that both me and them will benefit greatly from this exercise.

But for now, I'll wait till I've grown a bit more.

3. Focus on my Twitter account

My main source for my email subs is still twitter. Wouldn't it make more sense to grow my Twitter account and then promote my Newsletter? Of course yeah.

I'll focus on my Twitter account and making sure I'm putting out the best pieces of content I can give.

The more I do this, the better the quality of my sign-ups.

So yeah, twitter it is.

Why Every Creator Should Have a Newsletter.

Okay, it doesn't have to be a newsletter.

It could be a blog or a just any medium through which you can write long form content to your fans.

You see, 280 characters isn't enough to pour out your thoughts and findings. Even if you write threads and hold spaces, it can never be the same as long blogs and newsletters.

So, write tweets and threads to give quick lessons to your audience, then send out newsletters to give them deep dives on problems and solutions and so on.

Plus, you can use this to share valuable resources like Notion templates and podcasts.

Not saying you can't share it on twitter. But it just makes more sense to provide some kind of context when you do, and the best way to do this is through long form content.

This applies to video content as well.

There's only so much you can share on tiktok, reels and shorts. To give better deep dives, you'll need to put out longer form videos, maybe between 20 to 40 minutes long (if not an hour)

Big Takeaways:

  • I want my newsletter to be an inspiration to others

  • Create a curiosity Flywheel

  • The network effect

  • Focus on my Twitter growth

  • Long form content is the best

And that will be all for this week.

I really hope you enjoyed reading this and learnt one or two things from all I had to say.

See you next Sunday
